05/03/2026 – Brighton 0-1 Arsenal “Gabriel the Giant: A Win Built on Grit, Not Glamour”
Well, that was painful, but we’ve made it through the other side, we’ve slogged out a massive win at the Amex while relegation threatened Nottingham Forrest have done us the favour of a lifetime, snatching a point off Man City at the Etihad. This could be absolutely pivotal in the title race, the gap is now seven with City having a game in hand, but nobody saw them dropping points this evening.
Arsenal have a knack at the moment of sending their fans to nearby hospitals with suspected heart attacks, however, thankfully unlike the Wolves disaster we held on tonight while yet again not getting out of second gear. It took just 9 minutes for Saka to get the opener on his 300th Arsenal appearance as the age of just 24! Quite the feat for this young man who has the opportunity to break all the records at Arsenal. After the goal though we looked poor and it was a painful watch from then on, there was very little creativity and to be honest very little link up play in general. The spaces between the midfield and Gyokores was far too big with Eze struggling to assert himself in any sort of role. The defence were A plus tonight, especially without Saliba, Gabriel was an absolute monster at the back and a deserved man of the match, he won everything. Mosquera put himself in trouble early on with a yellow card in the 10th minute, but he managed himself well after that, unlike Pedro Neto at the weekend. Hincapie also had a good game and worked very hard without the ball; he made it difficult for Gomez to beat him and didn’t allow many crosses into the box. Raya despite his early scare was solid again and gave us a base for our defence to be confident in front of. Zubimendi and Rice were superb as usual and were key in our defensive work, they won the ball back in key areas but more importantly they put pressure on the second balls when headed away by Gabriel. The attacking four today had a tough day out, Gyokores, Saka, Martinelli and Eze were all passengers, that’s not to say it’s completely their fault as they weren’t given much support or opportunity going forward. But it’s disappointing to see some of our most threatening players unable to make an impact.
Brighton despite showing more promise and working more opportunities than us struggled to create anything of real threat, there were a few half chances and a few times the final attempt should’ve been better. When I saw the team sheets and saw Wele (Welbeck) was on the bench I was chuffed. The form he has been in and just the absence of an out and out striker really helped us today. Rutter had two and three opportunities to work Raya and didn’t quite get it right. The narrative before the game was that Arsenal are now on the verge of playing the game too dirty, challenging like rugby and wasting time at every opportunity, but for years I’ve watched Arsenal being criticised for their players weaknesses, physically and mentally. I’ve also watched teams manipulate and bend the rules as it suits them to win the league, Man City did it against us for years, time wasting on throw ins and players going down to give opportunity for a tactical chat. To be honest, I don’t care one bit, for too long I’ve wanted our players to have some bite and give something back to the teams that have worked the rules against us in years gone by. Realistically, winning ugly is the way to win any trophy, of course if you can do it playing beautiful football too that’s even better. This team has shown it is very capable of doing both, in this current moment that football is second to the slogging out results but ultimately it was the brilliant football that has led to us being in this position.
Now it’s important not to get carried away but tonight really did feel massive. I do believe that both Arsenal and City will drop more points before the end of the season, that’s just the nature of the league this year, but boy what a position we find ourselves in now! Theres a little break from league action with the FA Cup at the weekend, we travel up to Mansfield, and it would be lovely to continue our run the best cup competition. However, no injuries is hugely important, of course we want to win the game but there needs to be some protections in place, rotation is key, especially for the likes of Rice and Gabriel who have played a lot of football recently. After Mansfield we are away to Leverkusen in the Champions League, before Everton at home. The busy schedule keeps coming but let’s take it one game at a time. COYG!!
